THE NURSES WALL ...
The Nurses Wall (originally known as the Nurses Wall of Gratitude) is a permanent virtual tribute conceived in 2019 by Pamela Jane Nye, an acclaimed UCLA clinical nurse specialist and advocate.
Built as an online, interactive registry, the project allows the global public to post free, virtual thank-you messages to honor the world's 27+ million registered nurses.
Key Milestones & History
Conceptualization (2019): After working for over three decades as a neuroscience clinical nurse specialist and stroke coordinator at UCLA Medical Center, Nye resigned to focus on global nurse advocacy.
Within 90 days, she established Operation Scrubs, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public charity.  Under this banner, she conceptualized The Nurses Wall as an initiative to launch during National Nurses Week and the World Health Organization’s designated 2020 "Year of the Nurse" celebration.

  • The Covid-19 Disruption: The initial rollout faced severe hurdles when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Nye famously noted that "COVID-19 stole" the Year of the Nurse celebration. Amid pandemic restrictions, delayed nonprofit tax approvals, and withdrawn funding, the physical events were delayed.

  • The Virtual Pivot and Launch (2021–2022): Pivoting to address the massive burdens frontline healthcare workers faced, the registry was built and tested as an "infinite online portal". It officially opened for widespread public postings during National Nurses Week in May 2021 under a "Thank A Nurse Challenge," with an initial goal of generating public appreciation notes.

  • Official "Gifting" Gala (2023): On May 12, 2023—coinciding with Florence Nightingale’s 203rd birthday—Nye hosted the "NightinGala" celebration aboard the FantaSea One yacht in Malibu, California. The event marked the official global gifting of the finalized version of The Nurses Wall to the public.
  • From inception to date, concept, website design and online operation costs for The Nurses Wall have been underwritted with Nye's savings and retirement income.
Dual Purpose of the Wall

  • A Perpetual Thank You: An open platform to provide an ongoing, zero-cost avenue for individuals to voice appreciation for unsung nursing professionals worldwide
  • Pandemic Memorial: It honors the thousands of frontline hero nurses who lost their lives to COVID-19 after choosing to work and care for their patients during the height of the healthcare crisis.
